I have been sewing !
Jan. 6th, 2011 12:18 am... just very slowly, and bad at uploading pictures, but here they are !
First there was a mountain of pleats...

Then I tacked them to a basic cotton skirt shape...

I pinned the skirt to shape, then decided agaisnt pleats and put some darts in the back.

And then I started playing with fabric...

The yellow bit on the outside is now red velvet, and there's a bigger strip of velvet on the left side of the apron. I might add some grey bows here and there but... I'm not sure. They do come up now and then in 1887, but skirt are mostly plain, with contrasting panels, big vertical pleats and sometimes big buttons used as decoration. Maybe I'll make some big buttons... I'll have to check whether or not they work with what I have in mind for the top.
As you see, the skirt is meant to go over the bump, and I adjusted the length accodrinly, something I'm not sure happened in victorian times (there's one pregnancy outfit in Bradfield, the skirt has a normal, non-adjustable waistband size and hooks to the back of the bodice, it isn't any longer int he front than in the back). I guess that's just adaptation to modern standards !
