I just rewatched "Shooting Fish" for the first time since it came on the big screen back in 1997. And back then I did NOT notice AT ALL how nerdy the main characters are. I just thought they were between normal and kinda cool.
*facepalm* No wonder I've only ever dated Debian devs or users and ended up marrying one... (Yeah, I'm pretty restrictive in my choice of men. I leave the Gentoo fan to my sister)

Actually, I think I need to burn that one on DVD, I'll seriously want to watch it again and again.

I'm back ! I'm tired ! No wait, I'm not tired, I'm... exhausted ! Don't know why going to the movies and wearing a corset for four hours killed me that way. Maybe it has to do with the getting up early on a day off and running errands and makign important phone calls and getting ready before the Darkstones came.
So Lord and [livejournal.com profile] lady_darkstone arrived around half past eleven, we made ourselves something to eat, ate, ironed our costumes (those 9 meters of muslin in my skirt... argh !), hopped into our underwear, did our hair, hopped into the costumes, grabbed the key, found a parking place in the town center and were barely on time for the movie. I pulled out my dotted muslin skirt and striped pierrot, and [livejournal.com profile] lady_darkstone wore her française and made a pouf following Kendra's tutorial. With only her own hair and a net and fabric pouf.
It was obviously a baaaaad day for taking pictures. It had rained for the last 24 hours and everything was drenched, there was no way we'd get nice pictures outside without ruining our skirts, and when we got home afterwards it had gotten a little bit drier, but the sun was gone. This long babbling was meant as a meager apology for the less than stellar pictures )

As for the movie itself, I liked it - not loved, liked. I was surprised when it ended and found it a little errr... sort of short. The costumes were gorgeous, and I need to see them again and hit the pause button every minute. The plot I found a bit light - but still miles better than Marie-Antoinette in my eyes*. Good acting, pretty pictures, heavy-drooling costume porn. On the whole, it's a YAY ! When can I get it on DVD ?

*Please note that I have a big issue with Sofia Coppola. This comes from someones who thinks her movie embed the quintessence of boredom.

I'm home !

We went to see Angel tonight, and we both loved it. It's a really nice story, well told and well acted, funny, not taking itself too seriously. And the costumes ? *drool* I'm not very good at getting details from a first viewing, but...
- the red dress : it is pretty, esp. the bodice. Maybe a tad too much, but still pretty !
- see the white number Lucy Russel (yay !) is wearing right behing her ? Yummy !
- OMG, Barbara Cartland !!!
-
Wrapping gown love
- I'm so mad I couldn't find any better pics online of the blue outfit ! We wants it...
- the green theatre dress is in the same vein as the red one : over-the-top, at least twenty years behind fashion, but ooooh ! green velvet !
- and finally, the visite Angel is wearing the last time she leaves her house... I wish I had gotten to see more of it !

I MUST get this on DVD !

A movie title that sums up your life?
Kamikaze Girls

A movie character that inspired you?
Any brave hero with a sword. I love swords ! "Buenos Dias, my name is Inigo Montoya..."

A movie character that reminds you of your first boss?
The boss from Mr Incredible. He wasn't *that* bad, but he had the same soft, smiling way of explaining things, no matter how said things would affect the listener.

A movie character that reminds you of your current boss?
Can't find the exact miw of stress, kindness and energy...

A line from a movie that appeals to your sense of humor?
"What are you doing here ?
- Merchandising !"
(from Spaceballs)

A scene from a movie that reminds you of your first ever date?
Think Cary Grant in a woman's frilly nightgown meeting Catarina Hepburn's aunt in Bringing up Baby. I retrospectively felt that kind of out of place.

A movie character that reminds you of your Significant Other?
Pierce Brosnan as the pipe-smoking scientist in Mars Attacks. Because he's a scientist so often (and partly willingly) unaware of life's realities and because he's funny.

A line from a movie that you have adopted and used?
“Life is ironic", from Woody Allen's Mighty Aphrodite

A movie that holds a clue to your closest secret?
Not exactly a movie, but Desperate Housewives

Give us another clue?
Perfectionnism

A costume from a movie that would take pride of place in your wardrobe?
Kate Winslet boarding suit in Titanic

A movie title that sums up the occasion you lost your virginity?
Goldfinger

And why?
I won't go into the details here

A movie location that you have visited?
The doglike dragon from Neverending Story, I rode on it, but my camera was broken, os I have no proof to produce.
The parketplace that's supposed to belong to the city of Condom in Le bonheur est dnas le pré actually belongs to a smaller village, Vic-Faizensac, where I've been several times, as my godfather lived near and made errands there.

A movie moment that still makes you cry?
I don't cry that much, actually...

A gadget from a movie that you wish you could have and use?
The cat bus in Totoro

And why?
It's a kind of cat, and it's as cool as the Knight bus

A movie title that sums up your experience with the opposite sex before you met your Significant Other?
Delicatessen

A line from a movie that was a real “wow” moment the first time you heard it?
"When you want to kill a King, you'll do it in front of his court" from Gangs of New York. It mad eme watch the rest of the movie. Again. And again.

A movie title that you’d have on your headstone as your epitaph ?
Singing in the rain

MA review

I dragged the Home Geek to the cinema yesterday evening, and it was kinda hummm... Let me explain.
The costumes are *wonderful*. They are a few historical weirdnesses (MA's hairdo before she comes to France, the masquerade dress (though it is a masquerade dress, actually, so it has a legitimate right to weirdness), maybe the shape of a few shoes, the white dress with lace (?!) sleeves MA wears in the Trianon), but I'm not 100% percent sure about them. And on the whole this is a very drool-worthy costume-whores-movie :D . I think [livejournal.com profile] heileen did a better job than myself detailing MA's dresses in it, and let me tell you, the extras are great, too. I have to confess one of my favorites for now (it may change) is MA's black dress with the fur coat she wears when she first talks to the Du Barry. And Marianne Faithful as Maria Teresia.... THAT was a genius idea !!!
My "but's" are more on the plot side. Honestly, I found the story was rather weak, and it really is the "just-about-a-girl" scenario. The images are absolutely beautiful, they create a wonderufl atmosphere, the music fits well with the plot, it's just that I don't like that much movies in which almost nothing happens. It has something of a postcard, or a music video... I know it's been *very* trendy since a few years (think In the mood for love for example), I'm just not such a big fan of this kind of films.
And,... the "french" accent, or whatever it's supposed to be... Another very trendy trick that bothers me. If the movie is in english anyway, whereas the original characters would have spoken french, why exactly would they have an accent ? hmm ?
So the general idea is : costume-wise very drool-worthy, but in the history of cinema, it has "2006" stamped on it and people will probably laugh about it in fifteen years and wonder how oldfashioned it is.
