MA review

I dragged the Home Geek to the cinema yesterday evening, and it was kinda hummm... Let me explain.
The costumes are *wonderful*. They are a few historical weirdnesses (MA's hairdo before she comes to France, the masquerade dress (though it is a masquerade dress, actually, so it has a legitimate right to weirdness), maybe the shape of a few shoes, the white dress with lace (?!) sleeves MA wears in the Trianon), but I'm not 100% percent sure about them. And on the whole this is a very drool-worthy costume-whores-movie :D . I think [livejournal.com profile] heileen did a better job than myself detailing MA's dresses in it, and let me tell you, the extras are great, too. I have to confess one of my favorites for now (it may change) is MA's black dress with the fur coat she wears when she first talks to the Du Barry. And Marianne Faithful as Maria Teresia.... THAT was a genius idea !!!
My "but's" are more on the plot side. Honestly, I found the story was rather weak, and it really is the "just-about-a-girl" scenario. The images are absolutely beautiful, they create a wonderufl atmosphere, the music fits well with the plot, it's just that I don't like that much movies in which almost nothing happens. It has something of a postcard, or a music video... I know it's been *very* trendy since a few years (think In the mood for love for example), I'm just not such a big fan of this kind of films.
And,... the "french" accent, or whatever it's supposed to be... Another very trendy trick that bothers me. If the movie is in english anyway, whereas the original characters would have spoken french, why exactly would they have an accent ? hmm ?
So the general idea is : costume-wise very drool-worthy, but in the history of cinema, it has "2006" stamped on it and people will probably laugh about it in fifteen years and wonder how oldfashioned it is.
